Early Life and Education
Pelphrey was born in Howell, New Jersey, on July 28, 1982. His path into professional acting started during his school years, eventually leading him to Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. He graduated in 2004 with a degree in theater arts.
His Rutgers training also included study at Shakespeare’s Globe in London. Mason Gross later highlighted Pelphrey as one of its theater alumni, noting his work on Task and his connection to the school’s Shakespeare training program.
That theater foundation became an important part of his career. Rather than moving immediately into blockbuster film roles, Pelphrey spent years building credits through television and stage productions.
From Guiding Light to Ozark
Pelphrey’s first major television opportunity came with CBS’ long-running soap opera Guiding Light, where he portrayed Jonathan Randall. His performance earned him two Daytime Emmy Awards, establishing him as a recognized television actor early in his career.
After leaving Guiding Light, he continued working across theater and television. His stage credits eventually included Broadway productions such as End of the Rainbow and Fool for Love.
His television résumé expanded with roles including Kurt Bunker in Banshee and Ward Meachum in Marvel’s Iron Fist. He later joined Ozark as Ben Davis, Wendy Byrde’s brother. Netflix’s official retrospective identifies Ben as a major character in the show’s third season.
The role brought Pelphrey considerable awards attention. He received a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2022 for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Ozark.
Tom Pelphrey’s Task Emmy Win
In 2025, Pelphrey took on the role of Robbie Prendergrast in HBO’s Task, starring opposite Mark Ruffalo. Rutgers’ Mason Gross School of the Arts identified the production as a major recent project for its Emmy-winning alumnus.
The role became an important new chapter in his career. Pelphrey discussed the series with CBS in 2025, including his work alongside Ruffalo.
The recognition reached a new level at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 14, 2026, when Pelphrey won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Task. The Television Academy lists the award as his first Primetime Emmy.
The win also followed his earlier Daytime Emmy success, giving him Emmy recognition across two different phases of his television career.
